Government faces embarrassment in Rajya Sabha
By: Tupaki Desk | 3 Sep 2013 5:53 AM GMTThe government faced some embarrassing moments in the Rajya Sabha Monday as the statutory resolution moved by Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley disapproving the ordinance on National Food Security Bill evoked loud "ayes" before being negatived through vote.
Jaitley moved the resolution "that this house disapproves the national food security ordinance promulgated by the President of India July 5, 2013".
It was taken up for vote before the motion on the National Food Security Bill.
After Chairman Hamid Ansari called for voice vote on the resolution, there were loud "ayes" coming from all parts of the house.
Bharatiya Janata Party members sensed that treasury benches had joined them in saying "ayes", leading to a glee in the opposition benches. Some of the BJP members were on their feet leading to din in the house.
The ruling party benches took some time to react. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Shukla offered to have a division on the matter.
He said the ruling party members had not consented to the resolution and they were ready for division.
BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu said the treasury benches should first admit that they had made a mistake.
The resolution was later negatived 118 to 92 votes.
Later, the house had to be adjourned for 10 minutes as there were differening demands from members on the way amendments to the food bill should be put to vote.
