AIADMK supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has been convicted in the disproportionate assets case. She has been found guilty of accumulating Rs 66.65 crore wealth disproportionate to her known sources of income during her first term as Chief Minister of the State, from 1991-96.

Special Court Judge delivered the verdict at a makeshift court created at Bangalore central prison at Parappana Agrahara. Jayalalitha has been given prison sentence of 4 years. At 66, this surely is a massive blow for Amma or Purutchi Thalaivi. She would be 70 when she comes out of prison. This effectively means her political career is doomed.

As a precautionary measure, inter-state bus services between Bangalore and Hosur across the border in Tamil Nadu have been suspended since 6am till late afternoon. It is said that former Chief Secretary Sheela Balakrishnan is the front runner for the CM post. Jaya Lalithaa’s loyalist Paneer Selvan who is currently the state finance minister will also have a chance.
