With six back to back flops on his shoulders, Raviteja took much time to deliver another movie. This time he has given a chance to ‘Don Seenu’ director Gopichand Malineni who earlier helped him crack with entertainment.
The CONTENT
Ravi (Raviteja) is a recovery agent living in Bangalore along with his father Mohan Rao (Prakash Raj). He is a bindaas kind of guy and saves actress Lakshmi Rai in a bar scuffle leading to a stunning song. On the other hand Shruti (Shruti Hassan) gets engaged to Rohith (Adivi Sesh) and the marriage is due for two weeks. Before tying the nuptials, Shruti wants to enjoy life to the core and her uncle Crazy Mohan (Brahmanandam) joins her in the act. She acts love with many persons and later fools them, but finally falls flat for Ravi. After discussing with her father (Nasser), she decides to break engagement with Rohit and marry Ravi. Enraged by this act, Rohit calls up his uncle Poorna (Asuthosh) to kidnap Shruti and teach Ravi a lesson. But when Poorna encounters Ravi, the shock of his life is received, as he is seeing ‘Kancharlapalem Shankar’ (Raviteja) after years. So, what happened to Shankar and what is going to happen now forms the rest of story.
The EFFORT :
On-Screen:
These kinds of roles are simply a cake walk for Raviteja and we have seen him umpteen times performing them. The truth is, though hit films left Raviteja for some time, his energy hasn’t. Once again he excels to core in comedy and action departments.
Shruti Hassan ventured into a complete commercial role for the first time and she is out there to deliver glamour first. Even in comedy scenes, her skin show is a treat to watch, while in songs you can feast your eyes. Last song of the movie, Paatikella Sundari, shows how hot Shruti is. The other heroine, Anjali once again makes you speechless with her cool looks and girl next door performance. She is the soul of second half.
Second of hero of this flick is once again Brahmanandam and this young hero is improving his dance skills a lot. Whenever there is a good script written, Brahmi excels with is comic expressions and timing.
Rest of the supporting actors including Prakash Raj, Asuthosh Rana and Adivi Sesh are quite routine.
Off-Screen:
Director Gopichand Malineni is always choosing a single line story with entertainment packed into it. This time too, he focuses on delivering comedy like in Don Seenu and Bodyguard. But no doubt, his ways in mending a good screenplay into a powerful watch has improved a lot. As long as commercial cinema works, Gopi will show his stamina.
Music director Thaman has proved once again that he is the king of background scores after the likes of Mani Sharma. His work simply highlights the partial show put up by actors and brings emotions to scenes. But he is not able to hold nerve in songs, which is quite common for him these days.
There is nothing much to describe about other departments like cinematography and art, as everyone did good like they do for all commercial flicks. Nothing exciting, and nothing weak.
The PLUSES:
· Out and out comedy in all first half scenes and climax
· Brahmanandam’s antics and Gangnam dance
· Shruti Hassan’s gorgeous look and skin show
· Humorous dialogues throughout the flick
The MINUSES:
· Same routine ‘Telugu’ story
· Little slow first half
BREAKDOWN:
As I said earlier, Gopichand Malineni should be appreciated for presenting a poor story as an energized treat. He needs appreciation for keeping the whole film on a racy note despite no big screenplay locks. On the flip side, he needs to deliver something different, or at least try to be different, rather choosing same commercial path for success.
These days audiences are expecting something new but still they are liking the same formulaic routine movies. In that aspect, Balupu will be their favourite choice as the movie lacks nothing fresh except Shruti’s glamour. However the first half of the movie seems little weak as the director or story writer haven’t induced much story there. Anyway, some interesting narrations will keep audience hooked. But the pace in second half and Anjali’s cute looks will hold our nerve to make ‘Balupu’interesting.
Raviteja is not able to come out of the commercial cocoon to deliver good movies. But he is not able to score hits too and Balupu gives him much needed relief if audience thinks they could pass this monsoon season with this movie. Else, there should be no nearer competitors like Singham to make Ravi mint more money for PVP.
The FINISHING Line: Regular Masala with little ‘Balupu’!
