With Parliament clearing the way for formation of Telangana state, the focus now shifts on identifying a new 'capital' for the (residuary) state of Andhra Pradesh.

As per the Centre's commitment, the new capital for Andhra Pradesh has to be identified within 45 days after Telangana state formally comes into being. Since last few weeks, Seemandhra leaders have been squabbling among themselves about the new capital of Seemandhra state. There is a mad race between several Seemandhra towns for capital status.

According to media reports, Donakonda is in the race for new capital of residue state of Andhra Pradesh.Donakonda is a town and a Mandal in Prakasam district; It is well connected to Bangalore, Hubli, Guntur and Secunderabad through Road and Rail.

Donakonda is situated about 90 km from Ongole, and is about 200 Kms from major Seemandhra towns like Kurnool, Guntur, Vijayawada, Nellore, Tirupati and Kadapa.Land needs of the capital city could be fulfilled by denotifying forest land around Donakonda.

This town has a World War II airport built by the British. The railway line connecting Vijayawada and Guntakal towns passes through Donakonda.

Even the weather condition of the town is also said to be very pleasant.It has 54,000 Acres Government Lands and the proposed new Capital has just 5 Lacs Population. The distance between Donakonda and Hyderabad is just 290 km – 5.5 hours journey. Donakonda Airport, a disused airstrip, is located some distance away from the town.

In his report to the GoM, the AP State chief secretary also mentioned Donakonda town as the best suited place for Seemandhra capital.So, don’t be surprised if Donakonda is named the new capital of Seemandhra.
