YSR Congress party chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy Saturday began an indefinite fast here against the Centre's decision to carve out a separate Telangana state.
Jagan, as the MP from Kadapa is popularly known, sat on fast in front of the party office at Lotus Pond in Jubilee Hills. Several party leaders and activists are also sitting on fast with him since 11.30 am.
The police have made elaborate security arrangements in view of threats by pro-Telangana groups to disrupt the fast.
Jagan is demanding that the Centre not divide the state without doing justice to all regions. He has accused the Congress party of dividing the state for 'votes and seats'.
Criticising the central cabinet's decision to bifurcate the state, Jagan said there was no precedent for initiating the process for the division of a state without moving a resolution in the concerned state assembly.
