Director Sri Prawin who got decent hype with ‘Gayam 2’ is now coming up with ‘Kaalicharan’, a movie that happens in 1980s backdrop. What is surprising is that this flick took months at Censor office to finally get released and let us see how it is.

The CONTENT

Set in 1980 in a village in Nalgonda district, rugged guy Kaalicharan (Chaitanya Krishna) ends up killing a goon Pasupathi’s (Pankaj Kesari) henchman. The killed guy also happens to be brother of Pasupathi’s concubine, a hot lady Kalavathi (Kavitha Srinivasan). Seeking a revenge, Pasupathi tries to get Kaalicharan killed in police station using his power but he fails to do. Finally, Kaalicharan is rescued by a politician (Rao Ramesh) who wants Kaali to enter politics and file nomination as MLA.

When Kaali is about to leave the village with his parents (father played by Naagineedu), they are attacked dead and Kaali escapes. At the same time Kaali asks his lady love Teertha (Nandini) to forget him, and after she attempts suicide, Kaali marries her. Hatching a plan, Pasupathi’s kept lady Kalavathi lures Kaali for help and stabs him in the belly ruthlessly. What happens to Kaali and why he is into this bloody bath, what happened in the past forms the rest of story?

The EFFORT :

On-Screen:

Chaitanya Krishna is terrific visually, but neither his expressions nor his voice added to the flavour of this rugged drama. Though he looked easy in a couple of minutes romance, he finds it heavy to carry emotion like a ruthless killer. Main villain Pasupathi, played by actor Pankaj Kesari attracts a bit for his sharp looks. But for Telugu audiences, performances like Pankag are a regular. Playing as villain’s unsecured love interest, actress Kavitha Srinivasan looks bewitching and her over the top is also a bit appealing. Nagineedu looks classy in the role of hero’s father, while rest other cast are just okay.

Off-Screen:

Director Sri Prawin who has delivered pale Gaayam 2 earlier has now come up with another interesting movie, but once again lost that grip on screenplay. He got enough ammunition to derive performances from actors, but once again tumbled at needed times to infuse intensity.

It is a surprise to see two cinematographers working for this flick and yet maintaining same pinch all the time. Both Viswa and Satish helped director Sri Prawin get that rugged and earthly tone look for the flick with their beautiful work. Also they should be complimented for making use of daylight all the time to get desired results. Art director too complemented the flick with his vintage artefacts for the flick. Background score given by Niranjan added value to the movie, but some quite melodies would have added to it.

The PLUSES:

·               Couple of intense elements

·               Visually enticing songs

·               Cinematography

The MINUSES:

·         Routine Story

·         Predictable Screenplay

BREAKDOWN:

A protégé of Ram Gopal Varma, Director Sri Prawin has created much hype saying that Kaalicharan is a realistic drama set in 1980s. Of course, the story he has selected might be a realistic one, but he failed to identify the fact these kind of stories have filmed by Telugu directors numerous times on silver screen. A guy’s family getting shattered and killed by a goon, and the guy taking revenge is nothing new for a story. But if you’re expecting some serious screenplay and nerve wrecking elements, the Kaalicharan failed in that part. Every other scene is quite predictable in the flick, and except passing the scenes with popcorn there is nothing like going gaga over them.

After showing every detail of hero’s reason for killing the goons, who would love to watch the killing of his sister in a boring flash back? At least if the director has hidden the reasons behind hero’s harsh reaction, audience will get curious to watch the flash back. Romantic track in a serious film is always a spoiler lest it got some heart-moving elements. Here in Kaalicharan, the love story is also quite simple and easy. Often it occurs to be director’s intention in capturing rugged locales from different angles (probably Ram Gopal Varma’s influence) but he failed to weave suspense and spice into the movie. All the time, movie passes like that giving some good and bad moments.

For the fact the entire movie speaks Telangana slang, it may get rewards in Nizam region. Otherwise there will be patrons for this flick only in A centres, but B & C centres will get bored of the pale story.

The FINISHING Line:
Powerful title, but powerless story!
