The Delhi government Thursday decided to allot 10,000 low-cost flats to the poor in the capital, where assembly polls are due in November this year.

The dwellings would be allotted through draw of lots.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. A total of 1.80 lakh applications were received under the Rajiv Ratna Awas Yojana for slum-dwellers under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

While the beneficiary will have to pay Rs.60,000 for the housing unit, the Delhi and central governments would bear the remaining cost.

Under the scheme, the Scheduled Caste beneficiaries will get the flat free.

A Delhi government official said the central government approved the construction of around 68,000 dwelling units in Delhi for the economically weaker section of society.

"Around 15,000 flats have been constructed and are ready for allotment," the official said, adding that about 10,000 would be allotted in the first phase.
