7.1 Magnitude Earthquake hits Nepal & North India

As many as two earthquakes struck India Today with epicentres in Nepal (7.1 in Richter scale) and Afghanistan (6.9 in Richter scale).

An Earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale hit Nepal on Tuesday at around 12.35 PM. The fresh quake was epicentred near the capital city Kathmandu which was devastated on April 25th this year, killing over 8,000 people and 17,000 others.

Tremors were felt Northern States of India including Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam and Jharkhand. As the tremors lasted for over 1 minute, People rushed out of their homes and offices.

The Earthquake which struck near the base camp of Mount Everest is said to be 10 km deep. These Shallow quakes are more dangerous as the amount of energy released is focused over a smaller region.

The quake created panic in some parts of Andhra Pradesh as well. Tremors were felt in Rajahmundry, Kakinada and Vizag. Impact was more this time compared to the earthquake on April 25th.
