In an attempt to curb the dummies, Election Commission of India has directed Chief Electoral Officers (CEO) of all States and Union Territories to display the photos of candidates on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) or Ballot Papers for the elections to be held from May 1st, 2015. So, The EVMs and Ballot Papers will have Names and Photos of candidates along with Symbols from now onwards.
In 2014 Lok Sabha polls, NCP Maharashtra-unit President Sunil Tatkare lost the polls by a thin margin of 2,100 votes just because of a dummy candidate filed by Rivals. A dummy candidate with the same name Sunil Tatkare managed to get 9,500 votes just because voters got confused.
As a result, Election Commission of India decided to put an end to such cheap tricks in electoral politics with the new move. The results could bee seen in Assembly elections to be held soon in Bihar, Pondicherry, Assam, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Kerala.
