Why did Modi wield a Broom?

Update: 2014-10-02 08:34 GMT
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday kickstarted the Nationwide campaign 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' which is intended to clean up India within the next 5 years. Symbolically, He wielded the broom at Valmiki Colony for just one minute. He even spent some time at the Valmiki temple.

Modi interacted with municipal workers for sometime and he himself put the collected waste particles into the dustbin. BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi and Party's Delhi-unit President Satish Upashyay accompanied PM during Today visit.

Valmiki Colony in Delhi has got a lot of prominence. Its the place where Mahatma Gandhi lived here for 214 days between the period April 1946 and September 1947. Starting the Clean Up India campaign at this place makes sense.
